merann asked: The thing I tend to tell people when they ask about my major is that these days, NO degree is going to guarantee you a job, so I chose one that I know I enjoy and can excel at. I've spoken to too many grads who have told me that a major you hate is probably a major you won't complete.

Precisely! Which is why I majored in Sociology, and just thought about what I might want to do with it along the way.

Good point!

RE: I message I received the other day.

Hi all,

I received an anon message a few days ago, making some valid, but incomplete points.

I realise why the person was on anon but can’t discuss these things with them at the moment - If you’re reading this, and you feel okay with it, would you like to get in touch with me unanon so that we can talk (privately, of course) about your thoughts and what I could do better?

It would be nice to be able to respond as well.

Thank you!

Responses for kawaiisocialjusticeblogger!

Thanks all!

That depends… how are the two of you with polyamory?

tinosouffle:
My feelings are sort of… mostly sadness. I wish I could feel okay with the story writing of late, but I’m not. In fact, the plots and storylines are leaving me indifferent. And while I’m pretty happy about Charlie, she doesn’t make up for the amout of queer baiting in the show, from the writers and actors, and within the fandom. It makes me very unhappy as a big queer sheep. I’m mostly just watching now out of an emotional attachment that I can’t shake, rather than genuine love. Season gr8, woo.

Thank you! :3

For the anon asking about religion and sociologists!

dmikalova asked: I think it's important to distinguish between gender roles - women serve dinner - and gendered actions - a woman serving dinner. Gender roles are oppression, gendered actions can't be assessed without context.

Yes, there did seem to be a mix up with the terminology.

I believe the previous anon was quoting ‘gender roles’ when what the original quote intended was ‘binary gender identity’?

Perhaps?

Anonymous asked: RE: "Okay but there’s nothing wrong with traditional gender roles as long as they’re not being imposed on someone?" This sheep needs to go back to sociology class. All gender roles are "being imposed on someone" -- it's just a question of degree.

I think what the person who said that was referring to was that sometimes people’s gender is going to look a little like what we would consider part of the binary, and that if that is who they are and what works for them, then there is no issue.

Yes, to an extent, these things are pulled from the societies we are born into (and more often than not, gender roles and binary gender ARE imposed, but not all the time). But if we’re going along that line, it is also true that everything we are (not only non-binary genders, but every other identity a person may hold) comes from somewhere outside before it is processed and made ours inside.

It’s a degree we can never get down to nil because as social creatures, and given that every idea we’ve ever encountered has its roots somewhere else and then somewhere before that, this means that all the things we experience as the basics of definition are building blocks handed to us by someone else.

So yeah, I know what you’re saying, but also some people do hold dear these genders that elsewhere are something that other people do not at all fit.

Saying the sheep needs to go back to class is a little cruel though.
If only the sheep could go back to class.
