The book I started with, that I would recommend quite highly, is Laughter and Ridicule by Michael Billig. It’s an overview of philosophical and sociological theories of humour, and looks at the topic quite critically, which is oddly satisfying, given that we tend to see humour as such an innocuous thing.
I must say that from where my dissertation is going, I’m don’t quite agree any more with his viewpoint (being that it is so critical), but it’s a great start and a thoroughly interesting read. PLUS, there’s a huge bibliography, so plenty of leads to follow!
