It is good to be curious; it is what drives us as sociologists. But do not expect to be welcomed with open arms, if at all. Realize, of course, that coming to this church as not only a researcher but a white researcher puts you in a position of privilege that even the best intentions will not be able to erase. Privilege is a multifaceted system with many sites and intersections of oppression and advantaging, so it is always good to be mindful of your privileges when in the field.
